New Orleans Outreach
New Orleans Outreach is a non-profit organization with the mission to improve the quality of public education by connecting our partner schools with thousands of volunteers and community resources to help them meet their needs. For over eighteen years, the New Orleans Outreach team has remained dedicated to this mission, as well as the city of New Orleans, by providing direct support to our partner schools through managing various volunteer-driven programs - including a teacher assistant program, volunteers working with multiple after school electives, an internship program, and many more unique projects. One of New Orleans Outreach's flagship programs is an extensive data-driven tutoring program that aims to improve students’ overall academic performance.
Volunteer positions include, but are not limited to: serving as a tutor (in the areas of English Language Arts and Mathematics) and serving as a teaching assistant (working in an afterschool enrichment class, from sports and spirit squads to gardening, robotics, homework club, cooking, yoga, and African dance and drumming class). Volunteers not only gain valuable insight into the changing atmosphere of public education in New Orleans but get to be a part of the betterment and revitalization of the educational system. All the schools New Orleans Outreach partners with are open enrollment charter schools with an average of 95% of the student population receiving free or reduced lunch. Service learners will develop meaningful relationships with the students they work with, and many of the students will look to the service learners as mentors.
