Metropolitan Center for Women and Children
Metropolitan Center for Women and Children (Metro) has existed since 1986. We offer many services to survivors of domestic abuse, stalking and sexual assault, including a 24-hour crisis line and crisis intervention, counseling, limited placement in safe, temporary emergency shelters and referrals to transitional housing, and legal information and advocacy.
Loyola service learning students may serve in any of the following ways:
- Help our shelter manager in the shelter office. This will involve direct interaction with our shelter residents, helping with day-to-day business, and supporting shelter activities.
- Participate in Friday Family Nights at the shelter by planning activities for parents and children or preparing and serving a family-style meal.
- Work with children who are living in our shelters by conducting play sessions and providing academic help when necessary.
- Working around our facilities (for example, loading, unloading and sorting donations).
- Helping our Spanish-speaking residents with basic communication and services.
Location: Our locations are confidential. Contact the Metro staff for details about locations.
Transportation: For the most part, volunteers will need their own transportation, although there may be public transit possibilities. Ask the Metro staff about this.
Days and times: Very flexible! The shelter office needs help all the time.
