Louisiana Green Corps

Louisiana Green Corps

The mission of the Louisiana Green Corps (LA Green Corps) is to provide green job training to unemployed, underemployed, court involved or otherwise disadvantaged New Orleans youth (ages 16 to 24) through the completion of impactful environmental restoration projects. The LA Green Corps trains youth in energy conservation home improvements, deconstruction and construction, and historic preservation.  At the same time, the LA Green Corps helps youth gain work adjustment skills, overcome social obstacles, secure a job, and identify resources to help them become successful, contributing members of the workforce.  This is accomplished by providing education lessons from a certified teacher and life skills lessons to the Corpsmembers in addition to the job training.  Corpsmembers who do not have a GED or high school diploma attend GED preparation class while others work towards their continued education goals.  Life skills lessons for all Corpsmembers include: how to write a resume, job retention skills, management of personal finances, computer skills improvement, sensitivity and diversity training, etc.

Loyola University New Orleans service learning students can help Corpsmembers learn basic life skills, investigate higher education options, increase their employability, and move their lives in a positive direction. Service learning students can also help with research and Corpsmember case management. Activities will take place on two of the LA Green Corps Sites: Alliance for Affordable Energy and Old City Building Center (OCBC). Service learners will have the chance to form personal relationships with the Corpsmembers of the LA Green Corps as you help them work towards a better life.
