Latino Apostolate/Cortez House
The Latino Apostolate aims to support the immigrant and limited English proficient members of our community in their efforts to integrate and engage with U.S. society, to combat barriers to full engagement and self-determination based on language, culture and race, and to empower individuals through educational, health and other services to meet their basic needs and achieve their individual goals.
ESL classes at the Latino Apostolate are held five nights a week and accommodate four levels of adult learners, ranging from pre-beginner to advanced. Class sizes vary from 10 to 25 students; learning styles and educational needs are very diverse. Volunteers may serve as classroom volunteers, tutors, or Language Exchange partners. Classroom volunteers assist the instructor, model target language, lead small-group activities and give extra help as needed within the classroom. Tutors are paired with ESL students who have fallen behind in their class or otherwise need extra help. They will meet on-site and work towards specific learning goals determined by the ESL instructor. The Language Exchange program is for volunteers working to improve their Spanish or Portuguese skills. The volunteer will be matched with an ESL student and the pair will meet weekly to practice their second languages through conversation and tutoring. Language Exchanges may be conducted off-site.
