Lafayette Academy Reading Room
ABOUT THE AGENCY
The Reading Room was created in 2007 to provide every second- and third- grade student at Lafayette Academy with one hour a week of one-on-one practice in reading fluency and comprehension skills. The tutors meet for one hour a week in the Reading Room with each of their two assigned students to work on fluency and comprehension. Tutors participate in shared reading aloud as well as assisting the students with book reports.
WHAT YOU DO
Service learners who serve at the Reading Room will select appropriate books based on the students' reading levels. They will read the books aloud, taking turns with the students, questioning them on what they are reading. In addition, tutors will assist the students in completing two book reports a month. Once a month tutors will play board games with the students.
WHAT YOU LEARN
The tutors will learn how to participate in shared reading skills and will learn questioning strategies and decoding skills. These will help them when reading with their students. Most importantly, Loyola students will recognize that New Orleans public school children are wonderful, loving children who want to succeed and learn.
