Lafayette Academy Reading Room

The Reading Room was created in 2007 to provide every second- and third- grade student at Lafayette Academy with one hour a week of one-on-one practice in reading fluency and comprehension skills. LEAP test scores reflect the success of program with 96% of Lafayette fourth-graders passing the LEAP last year. The Reading Room's focus has expanded each year to include helping the children develop critical thinking skills as well as increasing their awareness of the world around them.

Tutors play a vital role in helping these deserving children succeed.  Loyola service learning students will read aloud with second or third graders who will be assigned to the same tutor throughout the semester.  Tutors and Lafayette students will participate in shared reading of your childhood favorite picture and chapter books. The shared reading aloud will focus on increasing their reading fluency, while also teaching the children the skills to sound out new vocabulary.  In addition, book reports will be completed by the children with Loyola students reinforcing comprehension skills.  Classic board games including Sorry, Connect Four and Battleship are played once a month, often in small groups.

By serving in the Lafayette Academy Reading Room, Loyola students will have the opportunity to interact with loving, enthusiastic, and bright African American children who cherish one-on-one attention from a college student. They will get a glimpse of a thriving, well-disciplined New Orleans charter school that is achieving great success. And they will learn to love our delightful and deserving students.
