Harry Tompson Center

The Harry Tompson Center provides a calm and caring environment in which to serve the needs of the poor and homeless in the downtown New Orleans area.  We are a day center only, and we provide showers, laundry services, a telephone room, legal aid, medical care (including mental health), and prescription assistance.  Lunch is also provided daily at our site.

Loyola service learning students can help in several ways: (1) keeping waiting lists for guests who wish to use the telephone room or the showers, (2) doing basic medical intake for guests seeking medical care, (3) distributing towels and toiletries to guests, (4) sorting and unloading supplies in our storage area. We are busiest in the mornings from 8:00 am until 12:00 noon.

Location: 1803 Gravier Street, inside the Rebuild Center
Transportation: Drive (free parking in the St. Joseph church parking lot) or take the Claiborne Avenue bus (#16) to Poydras (near the Superdome) and walk 2 blocks
Days and times: The Center is open Monday-Friday 8:00 am - 2:30 pm, but we are busiest in the mornings before lunch. You can come for 30 minutes or 4 hours; we are flexible on the length of time volunteers spend at the Center.
