Hagar

Hagar's House

Hagar's House is a sanctuary for women and children in New Orleans that provides a residential community, resource assistance, and a safe place to transition into permanent housing.  Hagar's House is a program of First Grace United Methodist Church and its associated nonprofit, First Grace Community Alliance.

Loyola service learning students will learn about house residents and their stories.  Service learning students are welcome to attend our weekly social justice movie screenings & discussions on topics like feminism, race & gender.

Loyola service learners can participate in the following activities at Hagar's House:

Child Care & Children's Activities--Service learning students are often asked to work with the children of Hagar's House. We try to provide child care several hours a week so that mothers can have a break to rest, study, do chores, or attend events with the house.  Students are encouraged to develop their own programs for their time with the children based on their talents and passions-- ie: art, music, etc.

ESL tutoring-- Working with a resident to create a study plan & assist with English acquisition activities & homework. This includes preparing a lesson or plan before meeting each week.

GED tutoring-- Working with a resident to create a study plan & assist with skills & knowledge acquisition to pass the GED, especially high school level math. This also includes preparing a lesson or plan before meeting each week.

All Loyola service learning students placed at Hagar's House will be expected to maintain a helpful, peaceful presence at all times. Because of our homelike environment & the varying needs of our community, service learning students may sometimes be asked to help with tasks outside of the above-- these could include assisting with office work, transportation, special events & fundraising, yard work, and others.

Location

To protect the safety of our residents, the location of Hagar's House is confidential.  Students selected to serve at Hagar's House will be notified about its location.

Preservice requirements

Interested students will be asked to give a brief statement of interest after meeting house staff at the SERVE Fair.  Students who accept a placement with Hagar's House will also be asked to attend an on-site orientation.
