Course Title:

Learning objectives:

Service Learning Course Design:

1. Which course learning objectives could be integrated into Service Learning?

2. What do you want your students to get from the experience?

3. What types of service would be appropriate for the course (be specific, e.g. nursing homes, shelters, etc.)

4. How many hours will students do? How will it be incorporated (required, extra credit, etc.)?

Assessment and Evaluation

1. What types of academic assignments (reflection) will you use (readings, journals, discussions, presentations, etc.)?

2. How will they be graded?

3. How will you ensure that 1) grades are given for demonstrated learning (not for hours of service) and 2) your students' awareness of civic responsibility is enhanced?

4. What, if any, adjustments might you want to make to the course's traditional workload (e.g. fewer problem sets, fewer tests)? What kinds of learning can the service-related work facilitate that are currently being covered in another way or assessed in another way?

5. What are some course-appropriate but broad, non-technical reflection topics related to the work at hand (e.g. Professional responsibility, equal opportunity, stereotypes, diversity)?

6. What are some possible assessment strategies (e.g. pre-tests, post-tests, surveys, work logs, journals)?
