Edible Schoolyard

The Edible Schoolyard New Orleans (ESY NOLA) changes the way kids eat, learn, and live. Our goal is to improve the long-term well-being of our students, families and school community.  We do this by integrating hands-on organic gardening and seasonal cooking into the school learning experience, culture, and cafeteria food programs of the schools we serve.  ESY NOLA involves students in all aspects of growing, harvesting, preparing and enjoying food together, as a means of awakening their senses, cultivating a school environment that promotes a sense of pride and responsibility for our land and natural resources, and developing a love of fresh, seasonal foods.  ESY NOLA is a signature program of FirstLine Schools (FLS), a public charter school network in New Orleans.

Loyola service learning students will support the culture of the Green Cafe at Samuel J. Green Charter School during breakfast and/or lunch shifts. The Edible Schoolyard New Orleans strives to create a restaurant-like atmosphere in the cafeteria. Volunteers will act as hosts and hostesses, waiters and waitresses in an effort to get kids excited about their meals and teach table manners.  Volunteers will also assist teachers in after school cooking and/or gardening classes that occur at all of our five school sites across the city.  Lastly, service learning students may choose to work in our garden with specific garden chores such as watering, weeding, and planting.

By working with The Edible Schoolyard New Orleans, Loyola students will work in a very hands-on way to address national issues of school food reform, childhood obesity, and community wellness as well as indirectly address local issues such as food access and poverty.  ESY NOLA offers service learners an opportunity to engage with our students, families, and community partners in a way that encourages our ultimate goal of changing the way kids eat, learn, and live.
