Edible Schoolyard

Edible Schoolyard

The mission of the Edible Schoolyard is to create and sustain an organic garden on the grounds of the Samuel J. Green Charter School and the Arthur Ashe Charter School. We integrate gardening and fresh seasonal cooking into the schools' curriculum, as well as their culture and food programs.  We involve school-aged children in all aspects of farming the garden and preparing, serving and eating the food. Through the Edible Schoolyard, children learn responsibility and respect for the natural world, and that hard work and collective efforts through teamwork yield real benefits in the garden, kitchen, school, and in life.

During the school day, Loyola service learning students can help with garden classes, garden-based science classes, or food classes for grades K-8.  Students may also help with our after-school garden clubs.  Volunteers must attend an orientation session through New Orleans Outreach, but they should work with ESY staff for placement and scheduling.
