Catholic Charities: Crescent House
Crescent House serves victims of domestic violence and empowers them to regain control of their lives. We offer many other services, including counseling, case management, safe housing, health advocacy, support groups, children's programming, and a 24-hour crisis hotline.
Crescent House offers Loyola service learners three different opportunities:
Child care
Loyola service learning students can provide childcare during our Wednesday night support groups for victims of domestic violence. Occasionally, volunteers may also help by preparing and serving dinner, cleaning up, and planning and participating in activities with women in each support group. Volunteers will learn about the effects of domestic violence and have the opportunity to practice relational and communication skills.
Clerical Work
Providing Crescent House's services to clients requires considerable administrative effort. Service learners may volunteer to assist with office tasks such as filing and communications. Students will learn about the day-to-day management of a major nonprofit agency and have the opportunity to develop organizational skills.
Tutor/Child Advocate Assistant
On Monday and Wednesday evenings, Crescent House hosts a free Children's Group. Loyola service learning students can tutor school-age children and assist Crescent House's Child Advocate. Students will learn about the challenges facing children of Crescent House clients. Students will be able to learn and practice classroom management techniques and gain valuable experience tutoring and working with youth.
