Communities in Schools
Communities in Schools (CIS) is the nation's leading organization dedicated to empowering students to stay in school and achieve in life. The mission of CIS is to surround students with a community of support. By bringing caring adults into the schools to address children's unmet needs, CIS connects students and their families to critical community resources tailored to local needs.
We are privileged to work with several public schools in New Orleans. Within each school, we provide a variety of programs, including: counseling, tutoring, reading and literacy programming for parents and children, ESL, afterschool groups (therapeutic, relational, academic), book distribution, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education, test preparation and college support, etc.
Loyola service learners will support CIS by working directly with children and teens in any of our programming in partner schools. Students will learn a great deal about education issues in New Orleans, especially as they relate to the lives of inner-city youth.
