Catholic Charities: ESL
Catholic Charities' English as a Second Language (ESL) program offers affordable English classes to hundreds of adults from around the world each year. Our mission is to help immigrants become independent, productive, and integral members of our society, respecting the dignity and potential of each human person. Our classes are taught in an English-immersion setting, with the help of dedicated volunteers at five sites throughout the greater New Orleans area.
Loyola service learners can serve in the following capacities:
- Tutor adult ESL students one-on-one or in small groups. Tutors get to know students' individual needs to help them prepare for job interviews, learn how to read and write in English, interact with doctors and public officials, or use the internet. Tutors will work with students of various levels of English proficiency, and get to see students' progress throughout the semester.
- Assist a volunteer teacher in an ESL classroom. Teachers Assistants are an essential part of our classrooms, and they are responsible for communicating with their volunteer teacher and jumping in when they see students struggling with certain topics. If a volunteer teacher is absent, TA's get the opportunity to lead a whole class of English learners, develop their teaching and leadership skills, and see students' progress throughout the semester.
By serving with Catholic Charities' English as a Second Language program, service learners will develop important intercultural communication skills as they get to know adults from around the world and various walks of life. They'll get to see the struggles of New Orleans' immigrant population first hand, and have the chance to make a lasting impression as they help their ESL students meet their goals.
