Catholic Charities: English as a Second Language
ABOUT THE AGENCY
Respecting the dignity and potential of each human person, Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans collaborates with the wider community to serve those in need. The Catholic Charities' English as a Second Language (ESL) program helps adult immigrants from over thirty countries each year. With the help of dedicated volunteers, we not only increase students' English abilities, but lead them towards becoming more confident, independent, and integral members of the greater New Orleans community.
WHAT YOU DO
Service learners can choose to work one-on-one as ESL tutors for adult immigrants, or join a classroom of adult learners and serve as a Teacher's Assistant (TA). Most locations operate during the evening, from 6:30-8:30 pm, and 4 sites are available throughout the greater New Orleans area. Out of consideration for our students, we require all volunteers to make a minimum commitment to one evening per week, for a two hour shift, for the entire academic semester, even if this exceeds service learning hours requirements for your class.
WHAT YOU LEARN
Loyola service learners can learn valuable intercultural communication skills, increase their cultural sensitivity, and learn how to problem solve during each evening's tutoring or teaching session. Service learners will have an opportunity to practice their leadership and organizational skills, and develop interpersonal communication abilities that will translate well into classroom or professional settings.
