Catholic Charities: Adult Education
Catholic Charities: Adult Education offers individualized, self-paced instruction to adults seeking to continue their education in a supportive environment. The majority of our adult learners are working towards passing the GED test in order to complete their high school education. Most are parents who seek to pass the GED test in order to improve their job prospects and the lives of their children.
We also offer Computer Literacy Education classes open to the general public. Computer Literacy provides opportunities for our students to gain skills that will allow them to access crucial information, communicate with loved ones, and become informed consumers.
Loyola service learning students will interact with adults of diverse backgrounds whose lives reflect a range of life experiences and educational challenges. They will experience first-hand the profound importance of education and its lasting impact on the lives of individuals and their families. Service learning students who work in our program will also gain teaching skills and knowledge and appreciation of learning style differences.
Loyola service learning students can choose one of the following volunteer opportunities:
1. Facilitate small-group reading circles to help adult learners improve their reading skills, such as reading comprehension and vocabulary development.
2. Facilitate computer literacy sessions, introducing basic computer skills such as using e-mail, the internet, and word processing.
Structured lesson plans will be provided to volunteers for all tutoring sessions.
