Office of Service Learning

The goals of Café con Ingles are to teach English to the adult immigrant members of St. Anthony of Padua Church and to build community at the church.  Café con Ingles English as a Second Language (ESL) classes meet for approximately 2.0 hrs in the parish’s school cafeteria after the conclusion of the 9:00 AM Spanish Mass at St. Anthony of Padua Church.  Before class begins students and volunteer teachers enjoy coffee, pastries, and conversation.

The Reading Room was created in 2007 to provide every second- and third- grade student at Lafayette Academy with one hour a week of one-on-one practice in reading fluency and comprehension skills. The tutors meet for one hour a week in the Reading Room with each of their two assigned students to work on fluency and comprehension. Tutors participate in shared reading aloud as well as assisting the students with book reports.

Mission: To elevate the life skills and abilities of inner-city student-athletes in America through mentor-based programs in athletic, academic and social development.

Vision:  To close the achievement gap by ensuring America's inner-city youth have access to highly effective afterschool and summer developmental programs, free-of-charge.

Playworks New Orleans seeks to increase opportunities for safe and healthy play in New Orleans public schools by sending full-time, trained coaches into partner schools to run recess, before and after school programs, in-class game time, intramural sports leagues.  Volunteers and service learners are necessary to our continued success in the schools as well as in the office.

Andrew H. Wilson Charter School is an open-enrollment public charter school located in the Broadmoor neighborhood.  It currently serves over 600 students in grades K-8 from throughout the greater New Orleans region. Wilson operates during the school day as well as after school hours to serve the academic, social and emotional needs of students, families and community members. Through the school day, students study English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education, arts and music.

Hagar's House is a sanctuary for women and children in New Orleans that provides a residential community, resource assistance, and a safe place to transition into permanent housing.  Hagar's House is a program of First Grace United Methodist Church and its associated nonprofit, First Grace Community Alliance.

Anna’s Arts for Kids is a positive youth development organization which provides after-school tutoring and training in the arts for youth 3- 16 years old.  The program has four core components; academic enrichment, arts and culture exposure, community service and learning about nature.  Arts classes include dance, drama, music and visual arts.
