Cafe con Ingles
The goal of Cafe con Ingles is to teach English to the immigrant members of St. Anthony of Padua Church and to build community at the church. Cafe con Ingles English as a Second Language (ESL) classes meet for approximately 1.5 hrs after the conclusion of the 9:15AM Spanish Mass at St. Anthony of Padua Church. Before class students and volunteer teachers enjoy coffee, pastries, and conversation.
Loyola service learning students will work with English language learners one-on-one to help them master spoken English. Students will learn about the lives of new immigrants to the US, for example the challenges they face in their daily lives, how they spend their leisure time, the importance of the faith, customs and traditions they bring with them from their home countries, and their understanding of American life and customs. Students will also gain a basic understanding of the methods and strategies for teaching English to non-English speakers.
