Café con Ingles
The goals of Café con Ingles are to teach English to the adult immigrant members of St. Anthony of Padua Church and to build community at the church. Café con Ingles English as a Second Language (ESL) classes meet for approximately 2.0 hrs in the parish’s school cafeteria after the conclusion of the 9:00 AM Spanish Mass at St. Anthony of Padua Church. Before class begins students and volunteer teachers enjoy coffee, pastries, and conversation.
Loyola service learning students will work with English language learners one-on-one to help them master spoken English. In the process, Loyola students will learn about the lives of new immigrants to the US, including the challenges new immigrants face in their daily lives, how they spend their leisure time, and their understanding of American life and customs. Students will also gain a basic understanding of the methods and strategies for teaching English to non-English speakers.
Before and after class, and sometimes during class, students will have a chance to practice their conversational Spanish.
