Bridge House
For fifty years Bridge House has served as a substance-abuse treatment center of last resort. Every day we accept and treat those to whom most other institutions deny admission: the homeless and indigent drug and alcohol abusers of the New Orleans community. The only requirement for admission is a sincere desire to change, and Bridge House accepts individuals without regard to race, religion, sexual orientation or ability to pay. The program is completely free of charge and residents are recommended to stay a full year. The program offers a therapeutic work environment that teaches residents discipline, ethics and marketable job skills. Almost 90% of the program's funds comes from the operation of a thrift store and a used car dealership, both of which are staffed primarily by recovering addicts.
Loyola service learnng students can: help in the clinical office, shadow the on-staff cultural anthropologist, serve food at Tuesday and Thursday lunches, conduct grant research, sort and tag donated goods at the warehouse, make phone calls to local businesses for in-kind donations.
