ARC of Greater New Orleans
The Arc of Greater New Orleans is committed to securing for all people with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop, function, and live to their fullest potential. Individual Options is one of ARC’s Day Habilitation programs. IO is focused on the principles of Person-Centered Planning, whereby individuals with intellectual disabilities can choose to participate in the following activities:
- Volunteerism: participating in supervised volunteer projects at other non-profit agencies
- Health and fitness: learning about health needs, including exercise, nutrition, and primary and preventive care; participating in inclusive healthy living activities
- Leisure and recreation: cultivating interests by attending festivals, performances, readings, and other community events
- Performing and visual arts: creating art and challenging society's view of disability
Loyola service learning students will assist IO coordinators and clients by providing hands-on assistance with activities like art, music, photography, sign language, dance, theater, cycling, water aerobics, canoeing, basketball, soccer, kickball, walking, bowling, cooking, health workshops, and many more. Loyola service learning students can also accompany small, staff-supervised groups of IO clients to community volunteer sites and help them learn specific tasks.
By serving at the ARC of Greater New Orleans, students will learn to see the gifts, skills and abilities of people with intellectual disabilities. They will also learn about disability ettiquette and the barriers faced by people with intellectual disabilities. Students will learn how to teach specific tasks to people with intellectual disabilities. Finally, students who serve with ARC will learn how to change negative perceptions and advocate effectively for dignity and respect for people with intellectual disabilities.
