A's and Aces

A's & Aces

The mission of A's & Aces is to provide academic/literacy support, life skills and tennis instruction to Orleans Parish public school students. Tennis is a fun incentive that motivates children to participate in an education initiative, and is a tool used to teach character development and the student-athlete concept.

Loyola service learning students will assist 1st-4th grade children with life skills, reading, homework and/or tennis. We use the US Tennis Association's QuickStart Tennis programming (portable short courts with small rackets and large foam balls) on the elementary school playgrounds. The model varies according to each school’s situation, but usually we rotate groups iof children halfway through each session with half of the children having tennis instruction and the other half receiving academic assistance.  Enthusiasm is required, but training will be provided so no tennis/tutoring experience is necessary.  By serving with A's & Aces, students can learn about mentoring, tutoring, athletic instruction, and the New Orleans public school system.
