Summer Collaborative Outreach and Research Experience (SCORE)

Year 2: June 22 - August 7, 2009

FAQ for undergraduate students

  • The Summer Collaborative Outreach and Research Experience (SCORE) is part of an interdisciplinary and experiential approach to strengthen recruitment, retention, and training in natural sciences in post-Katrina New Orleans.
  • The centerpiece of SCORE is formation of three research teams that each consist of one faculty member, one high school teacher, one undergraduate, and three high school students.
  • These collaborative teams are analogous to research groups found at larger research universities and our expectation is that a diverse range of perspectives, ideas, and experiences will enhance the discovery process.
  • SCORE is most appropriate for upper level students majoring in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, or Psychology.
  • Undergraduate research students will earn a weekly stipend of $400. Undergraduates begin the program one week earlier than high school students.
  • Undergraduate research students are expected to work fulltime Monday through Thursday in their assigned research lab and then participate in SCORE group activities on Fridays. Given the nature of scientific research, it is likely that this program will require a time commitment of about 35-40 hours per week.
  • Undergraduate research assistants are expected to collaborate in all facets of the research endeavor and to help coordinate and oversee the activities of high school students on their research team.
  • Undergraduate research assistants will obtain new skills and experiences. Research performed during the summer could serve as the foundation of an honors research project.
  • Ideally, undergraduates will continue their collaborative research during the school year and work towards completion of a departmental honors thesis.
