Summer Collaborative Outreach and Research Experience (SCORE)

Year 2: June 22 - August 7, 2009

FAQ for high school teachers

  • The Summer Collaborative Outreach and Research Experience (SCORE) is part of an interdisciplinary and experiential approach to strengthen recruitment, retention, and training in natural sciences in post-Katrina New Orleans.
  • The centerpiece of SCORE is formation of research teams that each consist of one faculty member, one high school teacher, one undergraduate, and three high school students. These collaborative teams are analogous to research groups found at larger research universities and our expectation is that a diverse range of perspectives, ideas, and experiences will enhance the discovery process.
  • Science and math teachers from public and private high schools in the greater New Orleans community (i.e., Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, St. Tammany, and Plaquemines Parishes) are encouraged to participate.
  • The stipend for high school teachers will be about $400 per week. High school teachers begin the program one week earlier than high school students.
  • College credit may be earned for this research experience and tuition will be waived.
  • SCORE will be held on the uptown campus of Loyola University New Orleans. High School teachers will work perform research Monday through Thursday each week and participate in fieldtrips and service learning activities on Fridays. Given the nature of scientific research, it is likely that this program will require a time commitment of about 35-40 hours per week.
  • High school teachers are expected to collaborate in all facets of the research endeavor and to help coordinate and oversee the activities of high school students on their research team.
  • High school teachers will obtain new skills and experiences that they can use to enhance and enliven their own classrooms and laboratories.
