Info for high school students
- SCORE is designed for high school juniors who will be seniors during the upcoming academic school year. Exceptional sophomores may be considered for admission.
- A primary goal of this program is to recruit and retain students in fields of science and mathematics. We are therefore seeking students with a strong desire to engage in the process of scientific discovery and an interest in pursuing a science-related career. That is, you should at least be interested in an academic or professional career in science and mathematics.
- Students from public and private high schools in the greater New Orleans community (i.e., Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, St. Tammany, and Plaquemines Parishes) are encouraged to participate.
- Loyola University New Orleans does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, disability, veteran's status or national origin in its educational programs or activities. Students from groups underrepresented in the sciences are encouraged to participate.
- SCORE will be held on the uptown campus of Loyola University New Orleans during the period June 28-August 7, 2008.
- Students should plan on arriving on campus by 8:00 am each day and should arrange to be picked up by 5:30 each day.
- Students will perform research during the afternoon Monday through Thursday. On Friday, students will take part in a fieldtrip or service learning activity. Given the nature of scientific research, it is likely that this program will require a time commitment of about 20-30 hours per week.
- Students will also attend a math course Monday through Thursday mornings.
- Students who meet enrollment criteria will receive three hours college credit for the math course. Tuition will be waived.
- Students will receive a graphing calculator to use in the math course and to keep thereafter.
- Students will participate in a field trip or service learning activity each Friday.
