2004 Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Report
Crime Prevention Programs And Practices
Crime prevention is the anticipation, recognition, and appraisal of a criminal risk and the initiation of some action to remove it. The basis of any crime prevention program is education. University Police actively promote crime prevention education through programming, printed literature, and by direct access to its community members. University Police participate in new student orientation on five separate occasions. These orientation programs are presented to both new students and their parents. In addition, University Police participate in nine new employee orientation programs. Covered in the orientation programs are the various duties of and services provided by University Police, in addition to crime prevention practices and procedures, crime reporting and response procedures, and sexual assault reporting procedures. The Student Handbook also covers these topics as well as building access, rules governing student behavior, alcohol, parking, and student organizations.
University Police maintain a number of printed brochures and video productions covering different aspects of personal safety and protection of property. Group and private programs are also available and are conducted throughout the year. These programs are tailored to the needs of the university community as they relate to campus life and to the social and cultural events that are unique to New Orleans. These programs include:
Operation I.D.
A program that has proven beneficial to the university community is OPERATION ID. University Police have two property engravers at the main office and are available upon request. These engravers are capable to permanently marking on virtually any type of object such as televisions, stereos, radios, etc. It is strongly recommended that all community members permanently mark their personal property, ESPECIALLY BOOKS, and keep a record of all personal and university property. This record should be stored in a safe location.
Lost and Found
Each year University Police receive large numbers of unclaimed books and other personal property. Property turned into University Police is logged and stored in a secure location. Every possible attempt will be made to return property to the legal owner if the owner can be identified.
Rape Aggression Defense System (R.A.D.S.)
University Police sponsor the nationally recognized self-defense program for women, RADS. RADS is a 12-hour training course designed to maximize the physical defense abilities of women. The goal of the program is to increase the number of viable options for self-defense for a woman who is attacked. Participants have the opportunity to test their newly learned defense strategies during realistic attack scenarios.
Alcohol Awareness Week
University Police participate in the alcohol awareness week activities sponsored by Counseling & Career Services. The department provides demonstrations in the residence halls and various locations on campus utilizing alcohol breath testing equipment.
University Police actively promote and participate with other university organizations in programs, which include topics such as sexual assault, hate crimes, personal safety, protection of property, fire safety, alcohol and drug awareness, and bicycle safety.
