Season's
Greetings!
It
is that
time
of year
to give
thanks
for all
our blessings
and appreciate
what
we have
and what
we can
do for
others.
As co-chair
of the Parent's
Council,
it is
my pleasure
to wish
you all
the joy
this
special
season
of giving
can bring.
I was
happy
to be
able
to contribute
to The
Loyola
Fund again
this
year,
and to
those
of you
who have
also
made
contributions,
I say
thank
you.
I
attended
Loyola
as an
undergraduate
from
1972
to 1976
and went
on to
attain
my juris
doctorate
degree
at Loyola
Law School
in l979.
New Orleans
was different
then,
but so
was the
world
we knew.
In
the more
than
30 years
that
have
passed
since
I lived
in Buddig
Hall,
I have
returned
to New
Orleans
to see
the changes,
attend
reunions,
and now
to see
my daughter,
Shannon.
She is
getting
a great
education,
enjoys
a wonderful
student
life,
and sees
opportunities
in the
city
everywhere.
Shannon
loves
Loyola
as I
did and
still
do. The
facilities
have
grown
tremendously,
and the
faculty
is dedicated
and top-notch.
You
and I
believe
in Loyola.
That
is why
we send
our children
there
to be
educated
and to
grow
into
productive
and caring
individuals.
Tuition
only
covers
63 percent
of the
cost
to educate
your
son or
daughter.
We want
Loyola's
reputation
to continue
to soar
and its
academic
excellence,
as well
as campus
life,
to be
enhanced.
Please
help
the Parent's
Council
strengthen The
Loyola
Fund by
giving
whatever
amount
feels
comfortable
for you.
With
your
financial
support,
we can
attain
the high
goals
we hope
to achieve.
I
ask you
to give
with
generous
and thankful
hearts
to a
place
that
will
always
be a
special
place
for your
child
— a
place
that has
provided
so much
for so
many,
from my
generation
to our
children's
and beyond.
In anticipation
of your
generosity,
I say, "Thank
you" and
wish you
continued
blessings,
good health,
and much
happiness
in the
new year.
Warmest
Regards,
Maureen

Two

have

there
have
been
many

Thelonious
Monk
Institute:
Update
By
Tara
Templeton,
Class
of 2008, Maroon staffer
The Thelonious
Monk
Institute
of Jazz,
a nonprofit
education
organization
founded
in 1986,
began
a commitment
to New
Orleans
on April
2, 2007,
with
the
announcement
that
Loyola
University
New
Orleans
would
be the
new
home
for
its Institute
of Jazz
Performance.
The
program,
unique
in jazz
education,
is a
two-year
performance
program
that
affords
graduate-level
jazz
education.
The
Monk
Institute
has launched
a "Commitment
to New
Orleans"
that
includes
ongoing
school
and community
jazz education
programs
to help
strengthen
the school
system,
provide
employment
for New
Orleans
musicians,
attract
displaced
musicians
back to
their
hometown,
and unite
the city's
jazz,
arts,
and cultural
communities.
This is
the largest
program
initiative
in the
institute's
20-year
history.
For the
first
time,
one program
will embody
the institute's
entire
mission
of fostering
the next
generation
of jazz
greats,
educating
young
people
about
jazz,
and helping
to expand
and perpetuate
jazz.
The
Institute
of Jazz
Performance
Program
is the
world's
most
intensive
graduate-level
college
jazz
education
program
and attracts
top young
jazz
musicians
from
around
the world.
The
partnership
with
Loyola
University
New Orleans
offers
the Thelonious
Monk
Institute
of Jazz the
rare
opportunity
to expand
its college
program
to include
major
broadcasting
capabilities.
Loyola
is providing
the institute
with
its own
broadcast
studio
that
will
be used
by the
students,
faculty,
and major
jazz
masters
for videotaping
and for
presenting
live
broadcasts
via television,
webcasts,
and podcasts
as produced
by the Music
Industry
Studies
Program at
the university.
Classroom
instruction,
masterclasses,
and concerts
will
be documented
for broadcasts
to schools
and the
general
public.
"New
Orleans
is nationally
and internationally
known
for its
jazz.
The institute
is a
natural
fit with
Loyola,
the entire
New Orleans
consortium,
and the
city," said
Dr. Ed
Kvet,
dean
of the College
of Music
and Fine
Arts.

The
Seventh
Annual
National
Wolves
on the
Prowl
Community
Service
Day was
held
on November
3. In
the
Jesuit
tradition,
Loyola
strives
to develop
individuals
who
dedicate
their
lives
to service
for
others.
More
than
300
students,
alumni,
faculty,
and
staff
worked
on projects
that
were
held in
New
Orleans and
12 other
chapter
cities
across
the
country.
In New
Orleans,
students
fed
the
homeless,
held
a field
day
on campus
for
underprivileged
youth,
cleaned
up City
Park,
and
volunteered
at a
local
public
school.

On
November
1, the
Loyola
Wolfpack
and the
Tulane
Green
Wave
basketball
teams
clashed
in the
annual Battle
of Freret
Street exhibition
game
at Tulane's
Fogelman
Arena.
Prior
to the
game, more
than
100 fans
attended
a pre-game
pep-rally.
Loyola
fans
dined
on hamburgers
and hotdogs,
enjoyed
interactive
games,
had their
faces
painted,
and cheered
on the
Wolfpack
basketball
team,
introduced
by Loyola
Head
Coach
and Athletic
Director
Dr. Michael
Giorlando.
After
an exciting
game
and a
rally
in the
second
half,
the Tulane
Green
Wave
defeated
the Loyola
Wolfpack
53-68.
The Wolfpack
basketball
team
promises
a win
next
year
in this
spirited
Loyola
tradition.

Hello,
Parents!
Season's
Greetings
from
New Orleans!
My role
is to
assist
you and
support
your
needs
as a
Loyola
parent
or family
member,
as well
as to
raise
funds
for The
Loyola
Fund.
We believe
parents
and families
are an
important
part
of the
university
community
and that
you play
a vital
role
in your
student's
success
at Loyola.
Please
stay
plugged
in to
the university!
The most
powerful
steps
you as
parents
can take
to be
involved
and engaged
with
Loyola
are:
keeping
up with
the website,
reading
the LUNO
Magazine and
other
mailings,
attending
local
and on-campus
events
(such
as Family
Weekend,
October
3-5,
2008!),
referring
high
school
students
to Loyola,
hiring
Loyola
graduates
for internships
and jobs,
and,
of course,
generously
supporting The
Loyola
Fund.
I
am here
to help
you and
keep
you informed.
If you
have
any questions,
please
don't
hesitate
to contact
me at

An
architect
alum
has
proposed
a plan
that,
if adopted
by the
Board
of Trustees,
could
change
the
face
of Loyola
Reprinted
with permission
from The
Maroon
The
architectural
face of
Loyola
University
could
be changing
very soon,
thanks
to the
Kell Munoz
architectural
firm's
drafting
of a new
master
plan for
the main
campus.
The
Rev. Kevin
Wildes,
S.J.,
university
president,
said in
an e-mail
to The
Maroon that
he commissioned
the plan
after
discussion
with the
Board
of Trustees.
"I knew
we needed
to address
facilities
and will
have to
raise
money
for it,
so it
seemed
reasonable
to develop
some sort
of plan
for donors," Wildes
said.
