Libraries

Loyola University libraries house more than a quarter of a million books and bound periodical volumes. The university subscribes to over 1,800 periodicals and newspapers, and includes in its holdings government documents, scores, music CDs, audiovisual materials, and microforms. In addition, the library offers remote access to its online catalog and a wide variety of electronic indexes and full-text databases. Loyola’s library faculty offers a wide range of instructional opportunities for students, including building tours, class-related sessions, one-time workshops focusing on specific electronic reference services, and individual appointments.

Loyola’s beautiful new J. Edgar and Louise S. Monroe Library, the region’s most technologically advanced facility, opened in January 1999. Wired for the new millennium, the library features computer labs, multimedia classrooms, and over 650 Internet connections. Library highlights include the ACE Center (detailed under "Services and Support" beginning on page 11); The Lindy Boggs National Center for Community Literacy, which serves as a national clearinghouse for information, research, and resources pertaining to literacy; the Booth-Bricker Special Collections and Archives, housing The Walker Percy and His Circle Collection, the Archives of the Southern Province of the Society of Jesus, archive materials from the Frère Joseph-Aurélien Cornet Collection on Zairian art and culture, and the records and archive material of the Press Club of New Orleans; and the Visual Arts Center and Collins C. Diboll Gallery, the fourth-floor exhibition, archival, and lecture space. Phone: (504) 864-7133

The library’s Music Collections & Services moved in December 2003, and are now housed on the first floor of the Monroe Library. Books, scores, CDs, LPs, and current music periodicals, as well as our listening equipment (CD and cassette players and turntables), are located next to the state-of-the-art eMac lab, where students can access software and hardware ideal for music and multimedia projects.
