Loyola Institute for Ministry Joins the College of Social Sciences
The Loyola Institute for Ministry (LIM) became a part of the College of Social Sciences at the end of the spring 2007 semester. LIM provides a unique international program to learning sites in 26 states and four foreign nations.
The Institute’s coursework leads to graduate degrees and certificates in practical theology (Master in Pastoral Studies, M.P.S.) and religious education (Master in Religious Education, M.R.E.). These academic areas require a cross-disciplinary curriculum of theology and many social sciences – sociology, personal and organizational psychology, anthropology, political science, and communication. This type of interdisciplinary activity is at the heart of the Institute’s mission and has evolved in recent years into a more systematic conversation across disciplines.
For several years, LIM, in conjuction with the Department of Counseling, has offered a dual degree in practical theology and counseling. In the 2006-07 academic year, LIM and the Department of Criminal Justice began accepting students to a new dual degree in practical theology and criminal justice. This M.P.S./M.C.J. degree program will focus on the growing field of restorative justice, a faith and community-based approach to dealing with issues related to crime. This program is the first of its kind and offers promise for helping the Greater New Orleans area deal with its post-Katrina crime problem.
