School of Law construction plans continue

On September 27, Loyola hosted a reception for neighbors to unveil building plans for 502 Pine St. and to discuss the construction project at school.

At the Board of Trustees meeting last March, the trustees approved the construction of an addition to the law school. The construction project involves razing the Twomey Center, located at 502 Pine St., and building a four-story, 16,000-square-foot addition that will connect to the current law school. Construction costs are estimated to be approximately $5 million.

The architectural firm of Mathes Brierre Architects was engaged to design the new building. Principle architect Edward C. Mathes will be the lead person on the project. Other Loyola projects the Mathes Brierre firm has worked on are the J. Edgar and Louise S. Monroe Library and the Communications/Music Complex. The renovation of the law school when the Dominican campus was purchased was also their project.

"The law school expansion project is necessitated by criteria set forth by the American Bar Association, the law school's accrediting body, that stipulates the space requirements for law schools based on the number of enrolled students. The expansion will accommodate the existing student body of 850 and allow the law school to maintain its accreditation," said Dean Brian Bromberger. The law school will not be adding new students. The construction project will also create space for off-street parking.

Dates for razing the Twomey Center and beginning pile driving have not been determined at this time. The university community and neighbors will be notified in advance with information regarding a construction schedule.
