"Louisiana in Print"

Loyola's Collins C. Diboll Gallery is hosting an exhibition of contemporary Louisiana artists who utilize the printmaking medium. Examples will be seen ranging from traditional printmaking techniques to more modern interpretations of the media. A reception will take place on January 27, 2005, from 5 8 p.m. The exhibit will remain on display until March 11.

More than 30 artists will be represented, including: Masahiro Arai, Kimberly Arp, Raine Bedsole, Ron Bechet, James Burke, Barbara Brainard, Gerald Cannon, Teresa Cole, Brandon Graving, Cheryl Hayes, Brian Kelly, William Kitchens, Leslie Koptcho, Arthur Okazaki, Larry Schuh, John Scott, Allison Stewart, Gerry Wubben, Laura Richens, Mary Jane Parker, and Jacqueline Bishop.

Ron Bechet is a native of New Orleans. He was educated at University of New Orleans and Yale University, and currently serves as chair of the Department of Fine Arts at Xavier University. He was recently featured as a "Louisiana Artist" on WWNO.

Jacqueline Bishop received her bachelor of arts degree from the University of New Orleans after moving to New Orleans from the Dominican Republic. In the late 80s, Bishop became an integral part of a group of artists pulled together by the late George Febres and dubbed "Visionary Imagists" by writer D. Eric Bookhardt. She has had numerous solo exhibitions in the U.S. and abroad and is currently represented in New Orleans by Arthur Roger Gallery.

Barbara Brainard has taught drawing at Loyola since 1989. She received a Louisiana Division of the Arts Fellowship in 2000 and mini-grant in 2004 and was featured in New American Paintings in 1999. She is an active member of the Drawing Center (NYC) and the Los Angeles Printmaking Society. Her work is in many private and corporate collections, including New Orleans Museum of Art and Rutgers University. She is represented in New Orleans by Cole Pratt Gallery.

Gerald Cannon, chair and assistant professor of visual arts, created the digital fine arts program at Loyola. He has had more than 15 solo exhibitions and won numerous fellowships. He is currently working with large scale digital prints and immersive sensor installations.

Brandon Graving has pioneered a distinctive monoprinting technique with hand-made inks which interact with light by reflecting and changing color as the viewer shifts position. She creates three-dimensional surfaces by combining embossed impressions of objects and forms with the layering of different viscosities of ink. A native of New Orleans, Graving teaches at the Contemporary Artists Center in Massachusetts. Her work has been featured throughout Louisiana, as well as New York and Massachusetts.

William Kitchens, associate professor of visual arts specializes in book binding and printmaking and the art and history of books.

Allison Stewart has gained national recognition for her large, mixed media paintings that express the restless balance between man and nature. In 1998, Stewart co-founded Kid Smart, a Louisiana non-profit organization to teach inner-city children life lessons through the visual arts. She has served on the faculty of the New Orleans Academy of Fine Art since 1988 and has taught art at Loyola, Delgado, and UNO.
