Business Partners brings two special speakers to campus

The College of Business Administration has invited two influential guests to speak this semester as part of its Business Partners Program.

Wendy Lee Gramm, distinguished senior fellow and chair of regulatory studies at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University in Virginia, will speak Thursday, October 28, at 7 p.m in Miller 114. She will discuss her grandparents' immigration to the United States from Hawaii, where they began as pineapple farmers. Gramm is a member of the Board of Regents of the Texas A&M University System, having been appointed by Governor Rick Perry in 2001. She holds a bachelor of arts degree from Wellesley College and a doctorate from Northwestern University, both in economics. At a breakfast the following morning, Wendy's husband, Phil Gramm, vice president of UBS, an investment banking firm, and a former senator from Texas, will speak on the effects of government regulation as a hidden tax. The breakfast is by invitation only.

Manuel Ayau, the founder of the first private university in Guatemala, Universidad Francisco Marroquin, speaks Thursday, November 11, at 7 p.m. in the Miller 114. In addition to founding what is considered to be the finest university in Guatemala, he was also its first president and professor of economics. Ayau, a successful businessman, is a member of the Guatemala Stock Exchange and a member of the Guatemala House of Representatives and served as president of the Mont Pelerin Society. After meeting him in 1979, Ronald Reagan described Ayau as "one of the few people in the high political sphere who understands what is going on down there." Ayau will address Loyola on overcoming obstacles in business in Latin America.

The Business Partners Program was established to promote two-way communication between the CBA and business leaders, enabling the college to better serve the educational training needs of employers and employees across the country.
