Loyola offers a summer filled with activities and learning

Loyola announces a schedule of summer camps filled with fun, entertainment, and education.

The College of Music offers a Loyola Jazz Band Camp from June 6­12, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The camp is open to 7th through 12th graders, intermediate and above musicians, but only those who focus on the trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, guitar, drums, or saxophone. Cost is $175, with dormitory space available for students 14 years and older. To achieve balance instrumentation, the number of each instrument will be limited. Loyola Jazz faculty will teach theory, improvisation, combo, big band, private lessons, and masterclasses as well as faculty demonstrations.

The College of Music also will offer a Preparatory Ballet Program July 5­31. Intermediate and advanced ballet dancing, partnering, and variations will comprise the workshop. Intermediate level participants should be at least 11 years of age. The cost for intermediate is $240. Advanced students should be at least 14 years of age. The cost for the advance session is $368. The program is based on the Vaganova (Russian) technique. Full tuition is due by July 5.

The Department of Visual Arts will sponsor the Loyola Children's Summer Art Program 2004. The camp will be divided into two, two-week sessions. Session I runs July 5­16 and Session II July 19­30. Tuition is $225 for general public and $200 for children of Loyola faculty and staff, including a $50 non-refundable application fee. Refunds will not be given after June 1. The camp runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is offered to children 7 to 14 years of age. Painting, drawing, ceramics, printmaking, sculpture, jewelry, and mixed media projects will be offered. Children may attend ONLY one session. A final art exhibition for family and friends will be held. Registration will be held Saturday, May 8, at 10 a.m. in the visual arts building, on the corner of Broadway and Dominican streets.

The Loyola Recreational and Sports Complex offers a summer camp May 31 through July 23. The camp is divided into four, two-week sessions and is open to children 5 years through 6th grade. The camp runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday­Friday. Baseball, basketball, karate, floor hockey, recreational games, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, mini-golf, water polo, volleyball, and arts and crafts will be offered. All children will receive swimming instruction as well as daily free swim time. Session I runs May 31­June 11, Session II runs June 14­25, Session III runs June 28­July 9, and Session IV runs July 12­27. The cost to Sports Complex members is $195 for sessions I, II, and IV and $175 for session III. For non-members, the cost is $215 for sessions I, II, and IV, and $195 for session III. Tuition is due on the Monday prior to the start of the session. Before and after care and lunch are available at an additional fee.
