Professor of Religious Studies Grant Kaplan delivers Yamauchi lecture

Professor of Religious Studies Grant Kaplan will deliver the spring Yamauchi lecture Sun-day, March 21, at 7:30 p.m. in Nunemaker Auditorium in Monroe Hall. The lecture is titled "Can Doctrine Develop? Reflections on the German Contribution."

Kaplan is an assistant professor of systematic theology. He received his doctorate degree in 2003 from Boston College. A Fulbright Fellowship enabled him to study in Tubingen, and a dissertation fellowship brought him to the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. His dissertation, "Answering the Enlightenment? Friedrich Schelling, the Catholic Tubingen School and the Recovery of Historical Revelation," treats the question of revelation for Catholic theology in light of the problematic situation that arose in the Enlightenment. He has published several translations from German writers on theology and feminist anthropology.

The Yamauchi Lectures in Religion series was begun in 1985 in memory of the Rev. H. James Yamauchi, S.J., former chair of the Department of Religious Studies who taught at Loyola from 1956 to 1966. Yamauchi was known for his effective communication of knowledge about religion to the New Orleans community, and this lecture series seeks to perpetuate his work by bringing the results of religious scholarship to a wider audience.
