Student Successes

Kathleen Goodrich named FBI honors intern

While most college students spend their summers earning money or vacationing at the beach, Kathleen Goodrich will be working in Washington, D.C., with one of the nation's elite law enforcement agencies. Goodrich, a sociology/psychology junior and honors student, has been selected to work with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as an honors intern.

"It has always been a dream of mine," Goodrich says.

The application process was long and selective, and the finalists were required to have extensive background checks and drug-screening tests and write a detailed essay. The New Orleans field office chose Goodrich as one of the top five candidates in Louisiana and forwarded her application to the FBI headquarters selection committee. The committee chose her as a national finalist and asked her to continue the application process with an FBI representative in New Orleans.

Goodrich is no stranger to the experience of spending her summer working as an intern in a field that is fascinating to her. Last summer she was an intern for the U.S. Department of State in Paris where she worked with the Bureau of Diplomatic Security Services.

At Loyola, Goodrich is a member of several organizations, including the Zeta Psi chapter of Alpha Chi Omega, Phi Eta Sigma freshman honors fraternity, Psi Chi psychology honors fraternity, Alpha Phi Sigma criminal justice honors fraternity, and Alpha Sigma Nu National Jesuit honors fraternity. She is also involved in University Ministry's awakening retreat, the Honors Association, and the Loyola University Student Historical Society. She is a university ambassador and volunteers with Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

Sarah McGriff finalist for advertising award

Sarah McGriff, a senior majoring in advertising, was a finalist for the Most Promising Minority Student award. The American Advertising Foundation, the educational affiliate of the American Advertising Federation (AAF), gives this award to the nation's top 32 minority advertising students.

McGriff is a current member and social action committee chair of the Nu Mu Citywide chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She is a member of the Monroe Library Student Advisory Council, the Black Student Union, and the Ad Club. She also volunteers with Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

The AAF is the advertising trade association that represents the industry in its entirety. AAF has 130 corporate members and a national network of 210 ad clubs, home to over 50,000 advertising professionals.

Business student heads to business capital

Fernando Rivera, a senior honors student majoring in finance and economics, has a big future awaiting him on Wall Street. In October 2003, J.P. Morgan in New York extended an offer for Rivera to begin work in August this year in the fixed income sales and trading department. He readily accepted.

Rivera is very active around campus. He is the treasurer of Sigma Alpha Kappa, a social fraternity; the president of Beta Gamma Sigma, a business honors society; a member of Delta Sigma Phi, a professional fraternity; and is a member of the International Student Association. Rivera, a native of Honduras, would like to work in the United States for four or five years and eventually return to Honduras.

School of Law National Moot Court team is among top in the nation

The School of Law National Moot Court team finished in the top 16 at the 54th Annual National Moot Court Competition held at the Association of the Bar in New York in February. Loyola is the only Louisiana law school to advance to the national competition. This year, the team continued Loyola's tradition of merit in oral advocacy by advancing to the top of the 190 teams that participated.

This year, the team won many accolades at the regional competition, including Best Brief Award, Best Oralist Award, Third Best Oralist Award, and the Sixth Best Oralist Award. Team members this year included oralists and brief writers Mary Bubbett, Jason Giles, and Dominick Impastato, III. The team attended the competition along with their coach Sara DeForge and faculty adviser Professor Monica Wallace.
