Capital punishment debated at Loyola

The Society for Civic Engagement (LSCE) presents a debate titled, "Discourse on the Death Penalty" on Monday, November 17, at 7 p.m., in the St. Charles Room of the Danna Center. The event is a solution-oriented debate to foster insight and understanding of capital punishment in America. Part of the Biever Guest Lecture Series, the debate is free and open to the public.

Debaters are Denise LeBoeuf and Jeff Jacoby, nationally-known participants in capital punishment discussions. LeBoeuf is the director of Louisiana Indigent Defense Assistance Board Capital Post-Conviction Project and has spoken for a moratorium on the death penalty, recently appearing at Loyola University with Sister Helen Prejean. Jacoby is a death penalty proponent, a renowned columnist for The Boston Globe, and the first recipient of the Breindel Prize for opinion journalism.

Loyola Society for Civic Engagement (LSCE) brings to the Loyola University campus intellectual debate between opposite sides of the political spectrum. LSCE does this by arranging forums and debates involving Loyola students, faculty, community members, nationally recognized scholars, and other experts on important and controversial issues. In order to facilitate academic discourse, LSCE will publish an online journal entitled Civil Discourse. The journal will be bipartisan and will contain papers and articles written by those scholars, experts, and students engaged in LSCE's events.
