Loyola traditions: first Faculty Recognition Banquet

May 20, 2003, marked the beginning of a new tradition at Loyola as the university held its first annual Faculty Recognition Banquet. The banquet serves as a venue to recognize faculty members whose commitment to excellence and service, both on campus and off, has rendered them worthy of praise. Interim Provost Lydia Voigt, along with executive assistants to the provost Elizabeth Kordahl and Lisa Alexander, organized the event.

Dean of Arts and Sciences Frank E. Scully; Dean of the School of Law James M. Klebba, and University President Bernard P. Knoth, S.J., presided over the ceremony. Barbara Ewell, Professor of English in City College and recipient of the 2003 Dux Academicus Award, provided the keynote address; and the Rev. Simon Hendry, S.J., director of the Jesuit Center, offered the closing benediction.

Faculty receiving promotion to the rank of associate professor included Elizabeth Y. Hammer of the Department of Psychology, Brian T. Huddleston of the Law Library, and Elizabeth D. Orgeron of the University Library.

Those earning the dual distinction of tenure and promotion to the rank of associate professor status included Mukul Bhalla, Department of Psychology; Nancy M. Dupont, Department of Communications; Margaret S. Hulley-Frazier, College of Music; Frank Jordan, Department of Biological Sciences; Laurie M. Joyner, Department of Sociology; Paulette A. Richards, Department of English; and William F. Walkenhorst, Department of Chemistry. In addition, several existing associate professors honored with tenure included the Rev. Peter J. Bernardi, S.J., Department of Religious Studies; Kevin A. Fall, Department of Education; and Gail B. Tumulty, Department of Nursing, City College.

Receiving promotion to the rank of professor included Dane Ciolino, School of Law; Mitchell F. Crusto, School of Law; William P. Horne, College of Music; Kenneth C. Messa, Department of Math and Computer Science; and Ralph P. Tucci, Department of Math and Computer Science.

In the College of Business Administration, three faculty were appointed to distinguished professorships. Nicholas Capaldi was named the Clarence A. and Mildred Legendre Soule Distinguished Scholar Chair in Business Ethics; Caroline M. Fisher received the Bank One/Francis C. Doyle Distinguished Professorship; and Brenda Joyner received he Stanford H. Rosenthal Distinguished Professorship.

The School of Law named Dane Ciolino the Alvin R. Christovich Professor of Law. David R. Norman received the Marcel Garsaud, Jr., Distinguished Professorship of Law. William P. Quigley earned the title of Janet Mary Riley Distinguished Professor of Law. Bernard Keith Vetter took the prestigious Ted and Louana Frois Distinguished Professorship of International Studies; and James E. Viator was honored with the Adams and Reese Distinguished Professorship of Civil Law.

College of Arts and Science faculty meriting college honors included Sarah M.A. Gualtieri, Department of History, Excellence in Teaching Award; Mary A. McCay, Department of English, Excellence in Advising Award; Patrick L. Bourgeois, Department of Philosophy, Excellence in Research Award; and Maurice P. Brungardt, Department of History, Excellence in Community Service Award.

College honors in the College of Business Administration included Jerry R. Goolsby, Outstanding Teaching; Jerry W. Dauterive, Outstanding Advising; Caroline Fisher, Outstanding Research; and Joseph Ganitsky, Outstanding Service.

In the College of Music, Edward J. Kvet received the David P. Swanzy Distinguished Professorship. College honors included Margaret S. Hulley-Frazier, Outstanding Teaching; John A. Mahoney, Outstanding Advising; Janna K. Saslaw, Outstanding Research; and Allen Nisbet, Outstanding Service.

In City College, Professor Cathryn L. Glanville took the Anthony Waters Outstanding Teacher Award. The Rev. Gerald M. Fagin, S.J., took the Faculty Award for Excellence in Service; and John P. Clark earned the Faculty Award for Excellence in Scholarship.

In the School of Law, Professor John A. Lovett garnered the Outstanding First Year Teaching Award. Monica Hoff Wallace took the award for Outstanding Upperclass Teaching; Mary Garvey Algero for Outstanding Advising; Patrick R. Hugg for Outstanding Research; and Dian M. Tooley for Outstanding Service.

Seven professors merited university honors, including Laurie M. Joyner who earned the Service Learning Award.

The University Senate bestowed awards upon Jasjit S. Walia, Professor of Chemistry, for Outstanding Teaching; Kim Ernst, Assistant Professor of Psychology, for Outstanding Advising; Frank Jordan, Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences, for Outstanding Research; and William P. Quigley, Professor of Law, Director of the Law Clinic and the Gillis Long Poverty Center, for Outstanding Service.

Katherine H. Adams, Professor of English, received the 2002 Dux Academicus Award; and Barbara C. Ewell, Professor of English in City College, received the 2003 Dux Academicus.

The College of Arts and Sciences recognized 16 faculty members from 10 departments with emeritus status.

At the banquet Knoth's remarks centered on what makes Loyola unique. He noted, "Through the excellence of our faculty, we strive to develop students into a new generation of leaders who possess a love for truth, the critical intelligence to pursue it, and the courage to articulate it."
