| December 6, 2002 Jesuit service learning directors hold first conferenceOn November 22 and 23, 2002, Loyola's Office of the Provost and Office of Service Learning hosted the first conference for service learning directors of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. Representatives from 21 of the 28 Jesuit higher education institutions gathered to learn from each other and to examine areas of possible future collaborative efforts. A major topic on the agenda was a discussion of the characteristics of service learning programs on Jesuit campuses as compared to programs at public and other private higher education institutions. Other topics included an examination of the "nuts and bolts" of the various service learning programs including organizational structure, funding, sustainability issues, and administrative support. Loyola's Interim Provost Dr. Lydia Voigt, gave the welcome and provided insights into the practice and value of service learning. The Rev. Si Hendry, director of the Jesuit Center, and Jeff Guhin, Loyola senior, discussed the connection between service learning and the Jesuit identity. Conference participants were also provided a professional development opportunity by attending a workshop presented by Edward Zlotkowski, a national service learning consultant. The topic of the workshop was "Reflection: Ensuring the 'Learning' in Service Learning." The concluding agenda item was a discussion on whether the group should meet again in 2003 and consider forming a recognized group under the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. The vote was unanimous for holding such a meeting. A planning task force, which I am a part, will collaborate to determine a location and agenda for the meeting. Carol Jeandron, Ph.D., Director of the Office of Service Learning |
