| December 6, 2002 Faculty/Staff FootnotesPublications designer Allee Anderson's cover illustration of the 2001-2002 Student Handbook won a Certificate of Design Excellence from the New Orleans Chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Artists. David Benders was hired as a program service coordinator in Upward Bound. John Biguenet, Robert Hunter Distinguished Professor of English, published book reviews recently in the New York Times Book Review and the Washington Post Book World. His novel, Oyster, released this past summer in the United States and the U.K./Commonwealth, will be published in Hebrew translation by Matar Books (Tel Aviv). It has been named a Book Sense 76 Selection and was chosen for presentation to the White House Library by the American Booksellers Association. His collection of stories, The Torturer's Apprentice, has been selected by the Library of Congress for publication in Braille. His story It Is Raining in Bejucal, which appeared originally in Zoetrope, has been selected for inclusion in the annual list of 100 distinguished stories chosen by the editors of The Best American Short Stories 2002; the same story was reprinted in The Best American Mystery Stories 2002. Another story, I Am Not a Jew, which appeared originally in Book, was included in the annual list of the 50 most distinguished stories published in the United States and Canada by the editors of The O. Henry Awards: Prize Stories 2002. A recording of the live performance of I Am Not a Jew at Symphony Space on Broadway in New York is currently being presented on Selected Shorts, a weekly series broadcast on 125 local affiliates of National Public Radio throughout the United States. I Am Not a Jew was also presented by the national touring company of Selected Shorts Live at the University of Texas (Austin). Biguenet spoke on "Writing from the Bottom: The Deep South and the Writer's Voice" at the 2002 Annual Conference of the Associated Writing Programs and chaired a panel on Zoetrope and American Short Fiction at the 2002 Tennessee Williams Literary Festival. He offered the annual Goldtrap Memorial Lecture at Iowa State University on "The Sorrow and the Piety: Two Centuries of Mistranslating Dante" and also gave a reading of his fiction. He lectured to the Translation Seminar of the Comparative Literature Program of the University of Iowa and gave a reading of his fiction, which was broadcast on regional NPR affiliates in the Midwest. He has also given readings of his fiction recently in London, New York, Chicago, Dallas, Memphis, Blytheville, Oxford, and Jackson. Biguenet was a featured author at the national conference of the American Library Association in Atlanta, where he spoke on Southern writing and read his work. Brook Brown was hired in the University Library. Michelle Carmouche joined City College as an evening receptionist. Melissa Elledge was hired in University Library as a desk assistance. Robert Ficociello was hired in Loyola Institute for Ministry as a LIMEX writing tutor. Linda Fletcher joined Information Technology as a service associate. Department of Religious Studies Professor Robert Gnuse's article "A Process Theological Interpretation of the Primeval History in Genesis 2:11," was published in the Horizons 29 (2002). Lorenza Houser joined the School of Law as a word processing specialist. Carol Jeandron, director of the Office of Service Learning, presented the sessions "Service Learning and Reflection" at the 88th Annual Meeting of the National Communication Association held in New Orleans and "Current Trends and Future Challenges in Service Learning" at the 2002 SACS/COC Annual Meeting in San Antonio. Hazel Parker was hired in the Boggs Literacy Center as an adult literacy coordinator. Robert Schroeder, director of the Loyola Small Business Development Center, has been named 2002 state star of the Louisiana Small Business Development Center. Norman Taylor was hired as an engineer in Physical Plant. |
