Loyola Ballet presents its fall concert November 22 & 23

Performance features original work by internationally recognized choreographer

The Loyola Ballet will present Romance, an original work choreographed by internationally renowned dancer, teacher and choreographer Gilbert Rome, on November 22 and 23, at 8 p.m., in Roussel Performance Hall.

Choreographed to music by Antonin Dvorak, Romance is a collaborative effort between the dancers and the choreographer. A New Orleans native, Rome began his dance training with Gayle Parmelee, coordinator of Loyola's Preparatory Ballet Program and former director of the Loyola Ballet for 21 years. He is the recipient of numerous awards as a teacher and choreographer, and is the artistic director of Houston Repertoire Ballet. He also served as the resident choreographer and co-artistic director of City Ballet of Houston. His professional background includes the National Ballet of Canada, the State Opera House in Cologne and Frankfurt, Germany, and the Houston Ballet.

"I believe it is important for students to have an opportunity to work with professional choreographers, especially when they are part of the collaborative process," said Laura Zambrano, Loyola Ballet director. "The students have learned a great deal from working with a choreographer of Mr. Rome's caliber."

The Loyola Ballet will open its fall concert with excerpts from the classical ballet Raymonda, staged by Zambrano and Parmelee after choreography by Marius Petipa. Set to music by Alexander Glazunov, the ballet begins with celebrations honoring the birthday of a young maiden, Raymonda, at an ancient castle in Hungary. Abderachman, a Saracen knight, arrives at the castle and confesses his love for Raymonda. She refuses his advances, and Abderachman attempts to abduct her.

Also being performed in the concert are original works by Preparatory Ballet Program faculty member Cheryl O'Sullivan, guest artist Lyle Guidroz, and Loyola student Megan Zuchowski. The Komenka Ethnic Dance Ensemble will also make a guest appearance.

Tickets for the performances, which are available at the box office, are $12 for the general public and $8 for the Loyola community with ID. For information, please call 865-3492.

The performances are funded in part by the Student Government Association and a grant from the Loyola University development/faculty committee. The Loyola Ballet, part of the Loyola University College of Music Montage Series, has been presenting semi-annual ballet performances to the public for the past 38 years.
