Laurie Joyner receives award at convocation

Assistant Professor of Sociology Laurie Joyner received the first Faculty Service Learning Award for Excellence and Dedication to Service Learning from University President Bernard P. Knoth, S.J. Joyner was chosen by members of the Service Learning Advisory Committee which is composed of faculty from each college, students, and community agency representatives.

"She is certainly one of Loyola's strongest advocates for service learning," says Carol Jeandron, director of the Office of Service Learning, who announced the award at the August 19 convocation.

Joyner and Interim Provost Lydia Voigt conducted the research project "The Process of Engagement: Linking Loyola University New Orleans to the Community" which led to the Consortium for the Advancement of Private Higher Education (CAPHE) grant. The grant established the Office of Service Learning. As director of the office, Jeandron is now project director of the CAPHE grant. Joyner has incorporated service learning into her capstone and other courses. She also made several service learning presentations on campus and for the Society for Applied Sociology 19th annual meeting. Additionally, Joyner serves as faculty adviser for Social Justice Scholarship Students, and she is a member of the Loyola Service Learning Advisory Committee and the Evaluation Subcommittee.
