Beloved Jesuit and professor dies

One of Loyola's most beloved teachers, the Rev. Gregory F. Curtin, S.J., died on April 1 after a long illness. He was 74. Father Curtin was a popular teacher in City College, and a well-known counselor on campus and throughout the city.

He had remained a vital part of university life up until his death, and had been coordinating the study of theology and religion with the study of film and video.

At age 26, doctors informed Father Curtin that he would not have a very long life due to a weak heart. Not only did his heart continue to operate for nearly 50 years after this bleak diagnosis, but his was such an open and loving heart that it provided him with a life of accomplishments and admirers. Many of Father Curtin's friends were able to say good-bye and offer prayers at the Thomas Hall Chapel April 3 and at a Mass of Resurrection on April 4.

Father Curtin was associate professor of theology and religious studies. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1944 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1953 in Mobile, Alabama. He did his undergraduate work at Spring Hill College and his studies in theology at West Baden College in West Baden, Indiana, and the divinity school of Loyola University Chicago.
