April 5, 2002 The Madwoman of Chaillot presented in MarquetteThe Department of Drama and Speech presents its theatrical production of The Madwoman of Chaillot, from April 12 20 in the Marquette Theater. Madwoman is a wonderful play, filled with a strong sense of the playful, the paradoxical, and the downright quirky. The plot is delicious humbug: a prospector believes he has discovered oil under the streets of Parisin particular, beneath the café of the countess Aurelia, an eccentric lady with many admirers among the ragtag people in the streets. A group of greedy businessmen play to raze the neighborhood to reap the rewards of the find. The Countess draws together her band of friends and tricks the villains into their own demise. The play aims for the small corner of the heart where hopes and illusions dwell. There are, in fact, four madwomen in the Madwoman. The play by Jean Giraudoux encompasses a large cast of skilled actors and the feathery touch of comic absurd. The show plays April 13, 18, 19, 20 at 8 p.m. and April 14 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $7 for students, children, and senior citizens. Call the ticket office at 865-3492. |
