February 1, 2002 Retired supreme court justice, longtime law supporter recipient of St. Ives AwardRetired justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court Harry T. Lemmon received the 2002 St. Ives Award from the School of Law Alumni Association. Lemmon, L'63, has had a long and fruitful relationship with the school. The relationship began in 1959 when Lemmon was a first-year law student. This was after he graduated cum laude from the University of Southwestern Louisiana with a bachelor's of science degree. For six years the former judge was a chemist. But the call of the judiciary was too great; and in 1963, he graduated salutatorian from Loyola and began a stellar career. Lemmon started practicing law with the family firm of Vial, Vial, & Lemmon in Hahnville, Louisiana. In 1970, he was elected to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeal and the Louisiana Supreme Court in 1980. He was re-elected twice without opposition. The Loyola School of Law Alumni Association honored Lemmon for his reputation as an outstanding attorney, his active involvement in the progression of the law school, and his contributions to the law alumni association. The presentation was made at the annual alumni luncheon held at the Sheraton Hotel January 11. For 20 years, Lemmon served as chair of the Board of Governors of the Louisiana Judicial College, which provides continuing legal education for all Louisiana judges in seminars, bench books, newsletters and other publications. He has always remained active in the Loyola School of Law, having served as an adjunct professor at Loyola and on the School of Law Visiting Committee. He also was named to LSU's Law Center Hall of Fame and an honorary member of the Order of the Coif. Numerous groups and organizations have sought Lemmon for his expertise and dedication to the profession. Consequently, he has lectured in such far away places as Greece and France, and places closer to home such as Colorado, Florida, Michigan, and Mississippi. He also co-authored the Louisiana Civil Law Treatise on Civil Procedure. Lemmon and his wife, U.S. District Judge Mary Ann Vial Lemmon, L'64, reside in St. Charles Parish. Four of their six childrenAndrew, Lauren, Roslyn, and Jakeare attorneys. Dr. Carla Lemmon is a psychologist and Patrick is a sociologist. |
