Student wins national collegiate journalism award

Leo Juarez, a junior from New Orleans, won first place in the sports category in the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) Story of the Year 2000 contest. This is a national competition sponsored by the Los Angeles Times and ACP. Juarez, a print journalism major, was presented with the award at the national convention in October. He is a 1999 graduate of Brother Martin High School.

The Maroon was also recognized as a Pacemaker finalist in the print newspaper category.

Juarez' story was titled "A Sporting Chance" and discussed the debate about whether Loyola should offer scholastic scholarships. It was published in The Maroon on October 6, 2000.

The Associated Collegiate Press is a division of the National Scholastic Press Association, formed in 1921. ACP was first established as a distinct division in 1933. It is the largest and oldest membership organization for college student media in the United States. These awards are the oldest and most prestigious for general excellence in college journalism.
