October 12, 2001 Drama and Speech opens fall season with award-winning playA recent Pulitzer Prize winning play about a sensitive subject will be the first fall production of the Loyola Department of Drama and Speech. How I Learned to Drive, by Paula Vogel, will run in the Lower Depths Theater October 11-20. It will be directed by Joanne Gordon. How I Learned to Drive was first presented on Broadway in 1998, where it won the Obie and Dramalogue awards for playwriting as well as the Pulitzer. It tells the story of a woman's ambiguous seven-year relationship with an uncle. The play details the conflicted emotions the woman feels toward her uncle, seen through the perspective of memory. The ultimate lesson for the character is how she learns to live with, rather than be defeated by, the scars of time. "This is a beautifully crafted story that unfolds with breathtaking insight, wit, and warmth," said Gordon. "All of Paula Vogel's works are triumphs of structure, mood and language, and this one is no exception." According to Georgia Gresham, chair of the department, "The play pulls the audience in to look at a sensitive, often undiscussed, social issue. The challenge is to let the drama unfold with humor and pathos at the same time, without trivializing the personal survival involved." Gresham emphasizes, however, that the play is intended for mature audiences due to its subject and content. How I Learned to Drive will be presented in the Lower Depths Theater on October 12, 13, 18, 19 and 20 at 8 p.m. and October 14 and 21 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 General Admission, $7 for students and seniors.
