April 13, 2001 Loyola camps make summer even betterLoyola has a schedule of summer camps filled with fun, entertainment, and education. The College of Music offers a Loyola Jazz Band Camp June 10 16, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The camp is open to 7th through 12th graders, intermediate and above musicians who focus on the trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, guitar, drums, or saxophone. Cost is $125, with dormitory space available for students 14 years and older at $200 for the six nights. A tuition deposit of $25 is needed by May 28, with an additional $25 for dormitory. To achieve balance instrumentation, the number of each instrument will be limited. Call John Mahoney at 865-2164 or 865-3037. The College of Music also will offer a Preparatory Ballet Program June 18 July 21. The program is open to children 11 years and older. The cost is $225 for the intermediate level and $300 for advanced classes. Individual ballet class cost $12. Intermediate and advanced ballet dancing, partnering, and variations will comprise the workshop. The program is based on the Vaganova (Russian) technique. Classes will be held in Communications/Music Complex Room 106. The college also offers a Special Junior Summer Course June 18 29. The program is open to children eight through 11 years old. The cost is $95. The program offers ballet technique, character, and make-up from 1:30 3 p.m., Monday Friday. Call Laura Zambrano at 865-2778 or 861-8172. The Department of Visual Arts will sponsor the Loyola Children's Summer Art Program 2001. The camp will be divided into two, two-week sessions. Session I runs July 9 20 and Session II July 23 August 3. Tuition is $200, including a $50 non-refundable application fee. The camp runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is offered to children 7 to 14 years of age. Painting, drawing, ceramics, printmaking, sculpture, jewelry, and mixed media projects will be offered. Children may attend only one session. A final art exhibition for family and friends will be held. Also, the visual arts department offers a Loyola Children's Summer Computer Art Program. The session runs July 16 20. The camp is open to children 11 to 16 years of age and will operate from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost is $170 which includes a $50 non-refundable deposit. An introduction to the computer as an art-making tool, the program offers instruction on how to digitize images from photos, drawings, video, and digital cameras as well as programs that make finished photos. Call the Department of Visual Arts at 861-5535. Registration will be held April 7 and May 5, from noon to 2 p.m., and must be done in person at the visual arts building on the corner of Dominican and Broadway streets. The Loyola Recreational Sports Complex offers a summer camp June 4 July 27. The camp is divided into four, two-week sessions and is open to children 5 years through 6th grade. The camp runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., Monday - Friday. Baseball, basketball, karate, soccer, swimming, tennis, water polo, volleyball and arts and crafts will be offered. Session I runs June 4 15, Session II runs June 18 29, Session III runs July 2 13, and Session IV runs July 16 27. The cost to Sports Complex members is $190 for sessions I, II, and IV, and $170 for session III. For nonmembers, the cost is $210 for sessions I, II, and IV, and $190 for session III.
