Faculty/Staff Footnotes

S.L. Alexander, assistant professor of communications, was the kickoff speaker for the "Her-Story Lecture Series" in honor of Women's History Month at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond in March. Her topic was "American Women Journalists." Alexander also led a Society of Professional Journalists Regional Writing Workshop "Covering the Courts" and earlier hosted a talk "First Amendment Law" for a contingent of journalists/professors from Kazakhstan who were in the United States on a state department visit.

University photographer Harold Baquet was featured in the February 15 issue of the Clarion Herald. Baquet was recognized for his contributions to his church, Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, where he serves as head of the ministers of hospitality.

Marian Ceasar has become assistant to the associate vice president for institutional advancement. Ceasar was formerly assistant to the chancellor.

Kristie L. Bellow-Haydel joined the Office of Admissions as an administrative assistant.

Associate Professor of Biology Patricia Dorn and two of her undergraduate research students, Astrid Gutierrez and Sarah Kott, presented their research at the "First International Meeting on Tropical Diseases" in March in Antigua, Guatemala. Their work is focused on the control of Chagas disease in Guatemala, a parasitic disease and a leading cause of heart disease in Latin America. They presented results on improving the diagnosis of the disease in people and in the bugs that carry the parasite and recent studies on the populations of the bugs. The meeting was sponsored by NeTropica, a Swedish international aid group and attended by people from more than 10 different countries including Central, North and South America; Europe, and Japan. In addition to Chagas disease, topics presented included: new strategies for inhibition of HIV, uses of snake venom, and identification and characterization of medicinal plants for treating disease.

Nick Folse became the new equipment coordinator in media services.

Frank Jordan, associate professor of biological sciences, attended the annual meeting of the Southern Division of the American Fisheries Society in Jacksonville, Florida, in February. He chaired the Estuarine Fish Ecology session and co-authored three presentations on "Habitat Use by Nearshore Fishes in the Estuarine Portion of the St. Johns River," "Microhabitat Use and Conservation Status of the Endangered Okaloosa Darter," and "Trophic Responses of Large Predatory Fishes to Habitat Restoration."

Anthony Ladd, associate professor and chair of sociology, participated in a conference/workshop in March titled "Risk: Searching for Vocabularies that Work" at the Hotel St. Marie in the French Quarter. This conference represented 25 environmental sociologists from Europe and the United States who meet annually to discuss their work in the area of environmental disasters and risk assessment.

Kenneth Messa, associate professor and chair math and computer science participated in a panel, "Challenges in Teaching Object-Oriented Analysis, Design and Implementation," at the Decision Sciences Institute Southwest Region's annual conference held in New Orleans in March. He also co-authored a paper with Denny Czejdo, professor and chair of math and computer science, and Steve Claverie, a Loyola graduate, titled "A Visual Language Based on the Object-Relationship Model." The paper was presented by Claverie at the Southeast ACM conference in Athens, Georgia.

Bill Quigley, professor of law, presented a paper at the University of Mississippi School of Law Poverty Law Conference on the Living Wage Movement in March. The Poverty Law Conference was made possible by a grant from author John Grisham, an alum of the University of Mississippi School of Law.

Jay Sonier has become assistant to vice president for institutional advancement. Sonier formerly served as assistant to the associate vice president for institutional advancement.

Suzanne Zornes is the new assistant to the vice president for business and finance.
