Loyola community gears up for spring commencement celebration

Board of Trustee chair is School of Law commencement speaker

All faculty and administrative staff are invited and encouraged to join Loyola for its newest traditioncommencement on campus. Join University President Bernard P. Knoth, S.J., and University Provost David C. Danahar, Ph.D., in celebrating this special weekend with our graduates and their families.

The university commencement for the College of Arts and Sciences, graduate and undergraduate, takes place Saturday, May 19, at 9 a.m. in the Marquette Horseshoe. The graduation ceremony for the College of Business Administration, College of Music, and City College will be held Saturday, May 19, at 5 p.m. in the Marquette Horseshoe. The university-wide Baccalaureate Mass takes place Thursday, May 17, at 7 p.m. in the Marquette Horseshoe. The rain site for the Mass and all commencement ceremonies will be the Recreational Sports Complex.

Donna Fraiche, L'75, will be the keynote speaker at the School of Law commencement on Friday, May 18, at 6 p.m. in the Marquette Horseshoe.

Fraiche serves as chair of the Loyola Board of Trustees and is partner in the New Orleans law firm of Locke, Liddell & Sapp LLP. She is one of the leading health care legal specialists in the state and is nationally considered to be an expert in the field. She is admitted to practice law in several states and federal courts. Even with her successful practice and myriad social and professional responsibilities, Fraiche also has given an abundance of her time and talent to Loyola. She has served nine years on the board, culminating with her election as chair last May. While on the board, she was on the Trusteeship and Institutional Advancement Subcommittee. Prior to joining the board, she served as president of the Alumni Board and chair of the 1990 Homecoming Weekend Committee

Fraiche is chair of the Louisiana Health Care Commission and is an adjunct faculty member at Tulane University's School of Public Health and Administration. She was awarded the C. Dana Snyder Medical Lectureships Award from Good Samaritan Hospital in Kentucky. Additionally, she has authored several articles on various aspects of health care law. She has numerous community affiliations and in 1996, she received the Multiple Sclerosis Society's Leadership Circle Award for Outstanding Business, Medical, and Civic contributions.

Baccalaureate Mass

The university-wide Baccalaureate Mass begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 17 in the Marquette Horseshoe. Participating faculty and staff, dressed in academic attire, should assemble on the Thomas Hall side of the Marquette balcony 30 minutes prior to the Mass in order to line up for the processional. This procession will follow the candidates for graduation. Families and guests will be asked to sit behind the areas reserved for members in the processional.

Commencement Ceremonies

The School of Law Commencement Ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 18 in the Marquette Horseshoe. If you will be participating in the School of Law ceremony, please meet in the Campus Ministry Living Room in Bobet Hall no later than 5 p.m. on Friday evening. Here you will robe in academic attire and assemble in the proper order for the ceremonial procession.

The College of Arts and Sciences Commencement Ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, in the Marquette Horseshoe. If you are participating in the College of Arts and Sciences Commencement Ceremony, please meet in Marquette 306 on the third floor no later than 8 a.m. on Saturday morning. Here you will robe in academic attire and assemble in the proper order for the ceremonial procession. Knoth will give the commencement remarks. David Moore, history chair, and Georgia Gresham, drama and speech chair, have agreed to act as our official ceremony marshals and will be on hand to assist in directing the faculty/staff assembly. Likewise, Vicki McNeil, Ed.D., associate vice president of the Division of Student Affairs, and Robert Reed, director of residential life, will assist with the stage party.

The College of Music, College of Business Administration, and City College Commencement Ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, in the Marquette Horseshoe. If you are participating in the College of Music, College of Business Administration, and City College Commencement Ceremony, please meet in Marquette 306 on the third floor no later than 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Knoth will give the commencement remarks. Jerry Dauterive, Ph.D., associate dean of the College of Business Administration, and Bill Barnett, Ph.D., associate professor, have agreed to act as our official ceremony marshals and will be on hand to assist in directing the faculty/staff assembly. Likewise, Nan Davis, director of recreational sports, and Robert Reed, director of residential life, will assist with the stage party.

The processional order for the university commencement ceremonies will be as follows: mace bearer and university banner carrier, students, faculty/staff, and official commencement stage party. The processional lines will begin moving into position at approximately 15 minutes before the ceremonies. The ceremonies will last approximately 1-1/2 hours.

Receptions

The Loyola Law Alumni Association will host a reception in the Palm Court for law graduates and their families immediately following the School of Law Commencement Ceremony.

The rain site for the alumni receptions will be the St. Charles Room.

Additional notes

If you have not done already, please let the Office of Public Affairs know of your ability to participate by completing the enclosed form and returning it to public affairs before Monday, April 23, 2001.

Because we are expecting large crowds on Saturday, we request those faculty and staff members participating in Saturday's commencement ceremonies park on the Broadway campus. Shuttle service will be available to bring you to and from the main campus.
