March 9, 2001 Students successes receive national attentionSkelly Bruce McCay, a Loyola senior and New Orleans native, has been named one of the top 20 students on the First Team of the 2001 All-USA Today Academic Team. He was chosen from 682 applicants. McCay was featured in a two-page color spread in USA Today in February and will receive a monetary award. The criteria of this award are designed to find students who excel not only in scholarship but also in leadership roles on and off campus. A key element given most weight in the judging of the entries was the student's original academic or intellectual project, described in an essay by the student. The judges stressed the student's ability to communicate their work in their own words. In December 2000, McCay was awarded a British Marshall Scholar for 2001 2003. McCay plans to pursue a master's degree in philosophy from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland in 19th and 20th century Continental/Pluralistic philosophy with an emphasis in phenomenology, pragmatism, and philosophy. He is pursuing a double major in philosophy and English and has an extensive list of extracurricular activities to his credit. English Writing Senior Michael Miley's film Ghost Writers is one of 30 films accepted to the Film Junkies Underground Film Festival in San Francisco. In Ghost Writers the ghost of schlockmeister director Ed Wood visits an unoriginal screenwriter to help him write the perfect script and win the girl of his dreams. Miley's film was screened at the Film Junkies Festival in February. Ghost Writers also was an official selection to the New Orleans Film Festival in October. |
