"Dungeon of Death," a lecture by Patrick Lemoine
Lemoine was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on December 19, 1945. He
was arrested in 1971 and spent nearly six years as a political prisoner
in Baby Doc Duvalier's dungeons. Lemoine described his imprisonment
and torture in his book, Fort-Dimanche, Dungeon of Death. Exiled
in 1977, he now resides in New York. Jonathan Demme, filmmaker and producer,
wrote, "Fort-Dimanche, Dungeon of Death is a vivid testimony
of the most horrendous kind of mental and physical cruelties that people
can inflict on their fellow man. Lemoine's harrowing tale about his
years of imprisonment in one of the worst dungeons in the world will
stand as a constant reminder that basic freedoms, when taken for granted,
can be trampled by the very ones elected or selected among us to be
sentinels of society."
