February 9, 2001 Japanese poster art on display in Monroe LibraryThe Biever Guest Lecture Series, the Department of Visual Arts, and the New Orleans Chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts present "The Poster Art of Tadanori Yokoo." Yokoo will speak March 22, 2001, at 7:30 p.m. in Roussel Hall. The exhibit will be held through March 23, 2001, in the Collins C. Diboll Gallery and Visual Arts Center, 4th floor of the Monroe Library. Yokoo's posters have been exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art in both New York and Tokyo. Art critics have used such phrases as "the standard bearer of anti-modernism" and "a spiritual visionary" to describe Yokoo, who is an inspiration to young Japanese and the hippie generation. Yokoo's posters have won many awards and much acclaim in the art field. As art critic Noi Sawaragi has said of Yokoo: "he delves deeply into the subconscious layers of memorywhat we might call the penumbra of its themeand brings right before our eyes a multitude of images that do not appear on the surface of consciousness, even though they are common property of us all." |
