The College of Music presents the vocal and choral music of Moses Hogan

Moses Hogan, artist-in-residence at the College of Music, will present his second annual concert, the Vocal and Choral Music of Moses Hogan, on Sunday, January 14, 2001 at 3 p.m. in Holy Name of Jesus Church.

Hogan will lead the Moses Hogan Singers through a program of his arrangements and original compositions. The concert will feature Loyola alumni bass-baritone Alfred Walker and tenor Brian Stratton, as well as soprano Henrietta Davis. The soloists will perform excerpts from Hogan's soon-to-be released collection of vocal works titled Deep River.

Moses George Hogan, born in New Orleans, is a pianist, conductor, and arranger of international renown. A graduate of the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts (NOCCA) and Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio, he also studied at New York's Juilliard School of Music and Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Hogan's many accomplishments as a concert pianist included winning first place in the prestigious 28th annual Kosciuszko Foundation Chopin Competition in New York. Since 1993, he has served as artistic director of the internationally acclaimed Moses Hogan Chorale. The chorale evolved as an outgrowth of the New World Ensemble, organized by Hogan when he began his exploration of choral music in 1980. The chorale has electrified audiences in the finest and most prestigious concert halls at home and abroad, ranging from Washington, D.C.'s John F. Kennedy Center to the famed Sydney Opera House in Australia.

Hogan has been increasingly in demand internationally as an arranger, conductor, and clinician. He was commissioned to arrange and perform several compositions for the 1995 PBS documentary The American Promise, whose soundtrack was released by Windham Hill Records under the title Voices. His discography includes a recording of arrangements of spirituals for the acclaimed soprano Barbara Hendricks and the newly organized Moses Hogan Singers titled Give Me Jesus on EMI Virgin Records; An American Heritage of Spirituals, sung by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and conducted by Moses Hogan and Albert McNeil, produced by Bonneville Worldwide Entertainment; two recordings of spirituals with renown countertenor Derek Lee Ragin on Aria Records and on Channel Classic Records; and The Best of the Moses Hogan Chorale Souvenir Edition, which features over 30 of Hogan's arrangements for mixed chorus, produced by MGH Records; A Home In That Rock, sung by the Moses Hogan Singers, a collection of spirituals and songs of faith produced and arranged by Hogan. Hogan's contemporary setting of spirituals, original compositions, and other works have become staples in the repertoires of high school, college, church, community, and professional choirs worldwide. Hogan's choral series is published by the Hal Leonard Corporation and by Alliance Music Publishers.

Admission to this concert is free and open to the public. Additional information is available through Loyola's ticket box office at ext. 3492.
