October 20, 2000 College of Music presents jazz pianist Sanford Hinderlie in concertThe College of Music presents jazz pianist and Loyola professor Sanford Hinderlie in concert Saturday, October 21, at 7:30 p.m. in Roussel Hall. Hinderlie's performance will draw upon Broadway jazz standards as well as original compositions. He will be joined by Loyola instructor and bassist Jesse Boyd and other special guests. Hinderlie has been a faculty member since 1981, teaching electronic and commercial music, recording, jazz piano, and music theory. He is known as a jazz pianist and performer of MIDI/synthesizer/computer applications. He performs regularly as a solo jazz pianist in New Orleans and has been a regular performer at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Hinderlie also is busy as a composer for television, radio, and films, such as for the feature-length movie Cut Up and industrial videos for the American Automobile Association and Entergy. The music for past New Orleans Big Easy Awards programs was composed and performed by Hinderlie. His first recording, Solo Flight, was released in 1996. As the president of STR Digital Records, he has produced 12 jazz and blues compact discs. In 1989 and 1991, Hinderlie travelled to the Soviet Union performing concerts and providing workshop/demonstrations utilizing his synthesizers and computers. In 1993, he performed as a jazz pianist for three months in Damascus, Syria, and returned in 1995 as the only American invited to perform in the first Euro-Arab Jazz Festival. That summer he also performed in Japan for the first time. Hinderlie was recently featured on a number of engagements in the Far East, including a special New Year's Eve performance in Hong Kong, a performance during International Week in Matsue, Japan, at the Elisabeth Conservatory in Hiroshima, and in Singapore. He was the music director and pianist for 1999 Song Island, an annual songwriting festival in Samsø, Denmark. Hinderlie lived in Germany from 1974 to 1979, performing, teaching, composing, and arranging. In the Frankfurt area, he founded and performed with a jazz-fusion trio called ART and also appeared regularly with the bebop-oriented Frank Maywald Quintet. Returning to the United States, Hin-derlie completed a master's degree at the University of North Texas, studying electronic music, composition, and jazz piano. He has pursued further graduate work in composition and film-scoring at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He was awarded major grants in 1987 and 1998 from the State of Louisiana to design and build state-of-the-art recording/electronic/ear-training studios at Loyola.
